The breed originates from Belgium where the first Pietrain breeders association was established. Pietrain pigs appeared in Poland in 1965 as a gift from Belgic, English, French and Swedish Polonia to Agricultural and Technical Academy in Olsztyn (University of Warmia and Mazury).
On account of the excellent lean meat content the breed was widely used in the fatteners production crossing as one of the component with duroc or hampshire.
Pietrain is an average size of pig with long, wide and strong back. It is very often called as a four-ham breed because of the unique shoulders and ham muscles conformation. Pietrain is a spotted pig with irregular dark and white spots. Red hair is usually found on white spots. The medium size head with straight or slightly bended snout and short and wide ears. The neck is short, very well-muscled without bulged chap. The chest is wide with strongly exposed ribs. Pietrain as a sire line needs to have at least 12 properly developed teats.
