The breed originates from the USA. It was based on the crossing of red pigs from Guinea with Iberian pigs and Berkshire pigs. It has been brought to Poland since the 1970.
Duroc pigs, especially adult animals, are very resistant to environmental conditions and are of great adaptability. The most precious trait of this breed is the excellent meat quality. This is why duroc pigs are very important element in all crossing programs.
Duroc is a pig of medium to large body size. Its’ body conformation is strong with wide back and well developed rump with ample ham muscles. Duroc is of different red shades from light gold to mahogany. The ears on the medium size of head are small, folded to the front. The chest is very well developed. Legs are tall, straight and widely positioned with slightly steep pastern. Duroc as a sire line needs to have at least 12 properly developed teats.
